Ham Common

Ham Common House

Robert Rigby Architects received a brief to explore the options for replacing a 1970’s single storey rear extension with a new ‘state of the art’ extension incorporating a glass staircase and floor and maximum external glazing, together with a new main entrance canopy. The challenge was to marry this aesthetic onto a ‘mock Georgian’ building design, located within the Ham Common Conservation area of Richmond upon Thames.

The high-tech solution was resolved to create a light, airy space in proportion to the original structure, making use of contemporary materials while keeping faithful to the character and style of the original house and its environment, blending seamlessly with it to create a large, modern family home.

The project is still anticipated, although its progress has been delayed by 2 other projects now successfully completed to the property, these being the incorporation of a small roof terrace/ sitting area, accessed from the attic gymnasium and designed to overlook the Common and also a large single storey Garden Room with black zink cladding and full width folding glass screen frontage.

The Garden Room building was designed as a multi- use building suitable for home office, gymnasium, additional guest accommodation and general family use. It was designed as a timber frame open plan structure and incorporated its own shower room and kitchen area.

Robert Rigby Architects successfully negotiated the requirements of Planning and Conservation Consent for all projects.
